On their own? And what did the American prepper community do for those who needed help?
From across the USA individuals and groups sent food, bottled water, and volunteers as a spontaneous response to the problem. This was not organized by any government entity. The city government had collapsed. By the way, New Orleans is below sea level which is something I am sure you can appreciate.

The problem was the magnitude of the disaster and that both the city and state governments were not prepared. The storm was massive and hit more places than just New Orleans, Louisiana. In the adjoining state of Mississippi, the impacts were significant but well managed. The then mayor of New Orleans, Ray Nagin, is currently convicted of corruption associated with accepting bribes during the reconstruction of the city. As it now stand he will be going to prison for many years.

The biggest problem is that too much people expect that the government is prepared. They are not.
Reset your expectations, in perspective, prepare yourselves, then you will not be disappointed.

Agreed. When seconds count, the police (government) are only minutes away.

There is no set of fixed solutions for an unlimited range of disaster scenarios that could unfold. It makes sense though, to provide options in advance. Options are created by skills, knowledge, information, network, vehicles, equipment and provisions.

For example, if your house may get flooded, you travel to your sister 30 miles away. If the roads are jammed, you can ride a bicyle. If your bike fails, you proceed on foot with your backpack, leaving behind less essential items. If you get wounded, you ask people for shelter, or you improvise a shelter and a fire.

There is no guarantee. You may live or die. But you tried your best. That is enough.

The problem is that some 99% of the population is thinking just that...., and don't do sh*t to prepare.
And they will have to tell there kid's: "sorry that daddy was stupid, short minded, and relying on government"

In an even worst scenario that father will be a potential enemy because most people don't admit their mistakes and don't sit down in a corner to see their kid's die a terrible death and then will follow them to heaven......

The people who were not in trouble were sending stuff over, don't expect that when shit hits the fan nation-wide.
I fully agree with authorities like police being a threat, it's something i always say, assume they're armed marauders.

In the USMC and the RNLMC you learn the true value of a building! .
Only in the marines.. GO ARMY!

But when you just look past all the dick measuring you'll see that mostly INFANTRY units learn to appreciate the very basics of human existance. Warm food, clean water, shelter, warmth etc..
