    Before You Bug Out...

I do not intend to bug out but was thinking about the difficulties associated with bugging out and came up with this brief list. I ask others to add to it. Remember, it is what you should do before you bug out.

Do you know where you want to go?
Have you done a practice run to your bug out location?
Have you practiced with the equipment in your bug out bag?
Have you practiced sleeping outside overnight during cold and wet weather?
Have you stopped to think if bugging out is even necessary?
Have you considered what may become of your residence while you are gone?
Have you done a map recon of the route?
Have you done a map recon of an alternate route?
Have you remembered to take the map?
Do you have a full tank of gas and checked the oil?
Have you checked the spare tire?
Have you supplies (to include prescription medications) and equipment with you as there may be no going back? (I think the estimate of 3 days before all the food is gone from the markets is optimistic.)
Do you have extra money as money may still be useful?
Do you have an alternate plan if the vehicle breaks down?
Have you informed trusted people where you will be?
Are you psychologically and physically equipped for the realities of what you are doing?

Now add your own to make this list even more useful.

Are you really ready to commit a highly efficient and almost guaranteed successfull suicide

(My definition of bugout is leaving a place without a known destiny or going to a worse place (prepwise) than you leave. Else I would call it a bug in ?)

    Kennis zonder wijsheid is (zelf)vernietiging.

I think very little dutch people have a BOL.
There are hardly any desolate places you can hide yourself from the hoard.
Therefore, the grey man's doctrine is important to hide yourself in plain sight.

That's because the big dutch guys do not fit into a mushroom. Only the little ones with a long beard have a BOM (Bug out mushroom). This is what they look like :

Do you understand the crucial factors that contribute to your disaster decisions? Like panic, burnout, disinformation, wishful thinking or self-deception.
Did you sufficiently consider three alternative decisions to respond to your acute emergency situation?
Is the speed of your decision making in line with the degree of urgency of your emergency situation?

Can you see constructive criticism by friends as a learning opportunity?
Is your bug out bag system made for a summer holiday trip or for saving lives in a winter storm?
Have you considered your chances of frostbite and hypothermia during winter camping in a bug out situation?
Do you have a warm mummy sleeping bag or polar clothing to defy the winter cold?

Do you know by experience how much stress you can handle in a long term life threatening situation?
Do you have a plan to prevent a mental breakdown in the face of death?
Did you manage to develop a network of trustworthy friends to cooperate with?
Have you considered that a disaster can be strictly individual, like becoming homeless or disabled, or losing your health?

How can you support people in a disaster who need your help badly, without self interest?
If disaster strikes, how do you contribute in your community to violence prevention, solidarity and hope?

To bug out means becoming a refugee so I will not do that unless my home is on fire or something like that.

In a panic/chaos situation, my idea would be to bug-in for 2 weeks. Lay low for a while, make sure the area is deserted and quiet. I would like to think that trouble makers and scavengers only roam around for a few days and then move on. After 2 weeks I would reconsider my options: stay put or pack up and leave. It would depend on the situation.

Same thing here, probably stay and find a way for food in the longrun.
